Chile battles an high rate on HIV infections

Chile is the country with highest increase of HIV infections, which have been increasing more than 10% yearly and not just in Chile but in Latin-america countries such as Puerto Rico and Guatemala. This epidemic is something that until now has been underestimated by the authorities. The sexual education is failing and it is very important that people start realising that being careful with sexual interactions is not boring but safe. More and more people has been encouraged to participate in campaigns for preventing spread of the disease, and also Chile has been making sure to give the antiretroviral therapy available for free. The number of Chileans undergoing treatment right now is 33.000. The need to improve early detection of HIV seems to be urgent. People need to be aware of the risks of having unprotected sex. Even more now when preservative pills are being used more and more, people may think that they are having safe sex, but those pills do not prevent infection. Society needs to be aware of the sexual condition of their population and do something about it.

  1. I think that is a very important thing to take into consideration. Every day people are being more careless when it comes to sexual intercourse, becoming more vulnerable to diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea, herpes, etc. In our school, at least, matters like this are rarely talked about. I think it is inevitable to prevent adolescents and young adults from having sex so instead they should show people how to be careful and to take the precautions necessary, that way ensuring a safe way.

  2. Nowadays, HIV has increased a lot in Chile, because people are not taking care of themselves. Also, we have to have in mind that a lot of inmigrants have entered the country, and they have brought a lot of infections (VIH included). In conclusion, people must have in mind to take care of themselves.

  3. I think that this is a very delicate problem in our society. We have to be informed and take responsability for our actions. Everyone believes that VIH is like far away from us, but no “its just around the corner”, so we have to be careful and take care of ourself.

  4. HIV is an infection that in Chile is transmitted mostly by young people. The problem is that in this country sex life begins at a very early age and there is no prior education, of all the diseases that exist through sexual transmission. I believe that the problem must be rooted, start educating young people about sex, in schools, universities, even at work.
